Local Southgate Info

Southgate N14 is area in Northern London. Primarily it was in Borough of Enfield, although some of its western parts lied within Borough of Barnet. The name of the area comes from the fact that Southgate was the south gate of the King’s hunting grounds in Enfield Chase.

The area development was induced by the infrastructure development. In 1933 North Circular Road through Edmonton and Southgate was completed and the London Underground Piccadilly Line was extended from Amos Grove, through Southgate tube station, to Enfield West.  So the population grew from 33,612 in 1911 to 73,000 in the early 1950s.

The area is famous with circular Southgate tube station and many various shops and restaurants. There are several large green parks here and the most famous of them is Grovelands Park, which was founded on the place of an 18th century mansion. In the area is the 800 years old Munchenden Oak – perhaps the largest oak tree in England. Interesting place to visit is the Christ Church in Waterfall Road. It is a building of stone which was built in 1862 by Sir Gilbert Scott and has a tower and spire. Other religious places here are Parish Church of St Andrew, Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Methodist Church which built in 1929 and five synagogues.

Southgate offers to its visitors and local people many pubs. Some of them were established in past centuries and later were renovated: Wagon and Horses, Southgate Club, Ye Olde Cherry Tree, The Woodman, The Gate, Fishmonger’s Arms etc.

In the area there are also many sport clubs (like the cricket club Southgate CC), cultural institutions (like Southgate Symphony Orchestra), many schools and Southgate College.

Here lived famous people like jazz singer Amy Winehouse, essayist and writer Leigh Hunt, author Paul Scott, tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton.
